UN Watches Guinea-Bissau Coup with “Deep Concern”

(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is monitoring events in Guinea-Bissau "with deep concern" after the nation’s armed forces ousted President Umaro Sissoco Embalo on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told reporters that "he appeals to all national stakeholders in Guinea Bissau to exercise restraint and exercise and respect the rule of law."

He added that "the Secretary General will continue to closely follow the situation in the country as it unfolds."

Earlier in the day, Guinea-Bissau’s military removed Embalo from power and shut the nation’s land, sea, and air borders, alleging that it had uncovered a plan to "destabilize" the country.

A faction of officers, calling themselves the "High Military Command for the Restoration of National Security and Public Order," stated they "assumed full powers of the state" in a message broadcast on state television.

The military also suspended all media operations, paused the ongoing electoral process, closed every border, and enforced a nine-hour curfew beginning at 9 pm local time (2100GMT).

This coup occurred amid claims of victory from both independent candidate Fernando Dias and the incumbent President Embalo’s supporters following the weekend’s presidential election, as the nation awaited official results.
